Overview

A vehicle is only as good as the components that it uses. With Apec, those components are built to OE specifications to guarantee the performance customers and installers expect with a unique aftermarket twist.

Wheel cylinders are an important part of any drum brake system. They consist of two pistons and a bore, with each piston connected to a braking force. When the brakes are activated, pressure builds up against the pistons, forcing them apart and subsequently pushing outwards on the brake shoes. This motion causes the brake shoes to press against and rotate the wheels, providing friction and slowing down the vehicle. Wheel cylinders must be kept in good condition, as any damage or wear can reduce their performance and create safety issues when driving.

Apec Wheel Cylinders are precision engineered to put perfect performance first. Whether they are subjected to extreme temperatures, torrential weather or intense driving conditions, Apec's wheel cylinders make the grade time and time again. Made with high-grade steel and aluminium, pistons and bores consistently achieve smooth and stable braking.

Like Apec's hoses, Apec Wheel Cylinders are outfitted with EPDM rubber for flexibility under intense heat, ozone and weather conditions. Once assembled, cylinders are pressure tested under industry-leading factory standards to reliably deliver braking that never disappoints.

Buying & Fitting Guide

Buying & Fitting Guide
The drum brake system includes multiple parts that must work harmoniously in order to efficiently apply pressure to the wheel hubs and slow a vehicle down. The brake wheel cylinder is the primary part that helps the brake shoes apply pressure to the inside of the drum, thereby slowing the vehicle down. To ensure that you get the correct wheel cylinder(s), it is best to check the size and shape of the one(s) currently installed so you can compare with the listed cylinders. Determining the correct cylinder type is essential. Relevant information for selecting the correct wheel cylinder is displayed below in our specifications. As car manufacturers regularly update certain peripherals and design of their models, some parts will only be suitable for particular models of certain years.

Helpful Tips

Helpful Tips
Rear brakes play a vital role in slowing or stopping a vehicle. Although they typically account for 25% of the braking action, without them, the vehicle would lose control during the simplest stopping situations. Taking notice of the warning signs or symptoms of a bad brake wheel cylinder helps you diagnose the precise source of the braking issues, but also save you money, time and a lot of frustration. When the brake wheel cylinder loses its ability to supply brake fluid pressure to the brake shoes, the pressure inside the master cylinder is compromised. This is what causes the brake pedal to go all the way to the floor when pressed. Grinding sounds coming from the rear of the vehicle as you stop is another indication of two potential problems: the brake shoes are worn out and digging into the brake drum or the brake wheel cylinder is losing brake fluid pressure and not smoothly applying the brake shoes. The brakes are an essential safety feature on a car. When a problem occurs with the brake wheel cylinder, it should therefore be replaced by an experienced mechanic and handled immediately.
